Do you own a concrete floor? Then polishing must be your first choice to maintain it. Floor polishing requires minimal maintenance and lasts longer. The process of concrete floor polishing uses advanced equipment for preparing a floor in industrial and commercial organisations. But do you know what diamond concrete polishing is?

With the use of the diamond floor pad, you can polish your concrete. The pad is abrasive and will file down the surface of your concrete floor. Subsequently, it polishes the floor until it shines. After finishing the process, a sealant is applied to maintain the floor’s appearance and increase its durability.

We at CA Drillers provide you with a polished concrete floor that meets all your requirements. Let’s have a closer look at the basics of polished concrete floors.

Basics of Polished Concrete Floors

Concrete Polishing Machine

There are four various types of concrete polishing machines available in the market –

  1. A Wet Process
  2. A Dry Process
  3. Rotary Process
  4. A Combination Of Any Two

Each floor polishing machine has its unique polish for concrete floors, and all deliver up to the mark level of polishing on any concrete floor.

The wet concrete polishing achieves success by applying solvent onto the floor and cleaning it with water. The other concrete polishing machines use the dry process that includes an application of concrete sealer, grinding and rolling to produce a smooth finish, followed by a transparent solvent-water paste to a freshly poured concrete surface.

Some polishers may have special features such as an adjustable slotted handle or an automatic shut-off feature. However, before using any polishing tools, you must read the instructions carefully. Manufacturers provide information with illustrated diagrams and photographs.

Surface Inspection and Preparation

Any project requires a unique technique, and surface preparation is an essential aspect of it. CA Drillers conduct a site inspection and consider several factors before starting floor polishing. We evaluate the concrete and make necessary adjustments for our polishing services based on the degree of concrete and its mineral hardness.

We check if the substrate is suitable and meets all the requirements in our list. The surface preparation process identifies whether the concrete has high or low spots. It checks the cracks and blemishes and fills them with epoxy or other suitable semi-rigid joint filler. If we find existing sealer, paints or epoxy coatings, we remove them before the floor polishing process.

Grinding

Machines with diamond-segmented abrasives are used for polishing. The floor polishing process starts with a rough grinding of the concrete surface. It begins with a coarse 40-grit metal-bonded diamond and then is followed by using the finer 80-grit bonded diamond. At last, an even finer 150-grit metal-bonded diamond machine is used.

These machines grind down the concrete surfaces till the desired shine is achieved. As the grinding process moves forwards, the coarser grit moves to finer grits.

Densifying the Concrete

After the initial coarse grinding, it is required to densify the concrete. Densifying the concrete will result in better floor polishing. A liquid chemical hardener is used for this purpose, which is made of sodium, lithium or potassium-based silicates. Apart from strengthening the concrete, it protects the concrete from staining and water penetration.

Polishing

Polishing takes place after the grinding and strengthening of the concrete. It is done layer by layer, and you can choose the gloss you want on your concrete floor. A diamond abrasive embedded with a resin matrix is used for polishing purposes. Depending upon your preference, the floor may be polished wet or dry. However, wet polishing creates waste slurry that can quickly spread into hard-to-reach areas. You must dispose of it by adhering to the rules and regulations of your region.

Curing

Curing is the next step after polishing to attain a flat surface. Concrete polishing experts suggest that the concrete slab be cured using a high-pressure water jet; it will ensure that all polishers are at the maximum level of effectiveness and provide a glossy finish to the floor. Curing should last for a minimum of two days.

A nicely polished concrete will attract buyers and resist damage from weather conditions. You can also talk to experts at CA Drillers to find ways to keep your concrete slab looking the best.

Sealing

After achieving the desired sheen, you must protect it against grease, dirt and other stains. An application of water-based or solvent-based concrete sealer is helpful to save your floor from dirt. Apart from making it resistant to stain absorption, the sealer gives more sheen to the polished floor. The floor polishing process involves meticulous details and must be done accurately. The sealant also protects concrete floors against moisture and wear and tear.

Tips to Maintain Polished Floors

Sweep and Scrub Regularly

Polished concrete is durable, so it is easy to maintain. Sweeping and scrubbing are daily tasks you need to do to keep the floor intact. The floor is prone to scuffs, spills and dirt, so a high-traffic area may need your attention.

Suitable Cleaning Solution

Cleaning solutions for polished concrete are different from those made for waxed floors. Choose the cleaning solutions that work fine on your polished concrete. Please remember that concrete is a reactive surface, which means you will have to change the floor cleaning solution you use for the floor scrubber. Refrain from buying acid cleaner, as it may damage your polished floor.

Promptly Clean the Spills

The polished concrete floor is resistant to spills but is not invincible against liquids. If the spills are not cleaned on time, they will leave stains. Moreover, the untreated spill may discolour the floor and reduce its shine over the years.

Appropriate Concrete Polishing Tools

Use the proper tools to keep your polished floor in optimal condition. Chemical-free polishing systems will keep your floor smooth, bright and shiny. Additionally, it will be easy to maintain and easy to operate for your cleaning staff.
