The professional golf tour, LIV Golf which is funded by the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia has finally begun. The day has finally come, and the wait is over. The first day of play for the brand-new LIV Golf league is in the books, with the LIV Golf Invitational Series teeing off on Thursday in London, after months of anticipation and controversy. Here’s a quick recap for those who didn’t see the game. Charl Schwartzel and Hennie du Plessis led the field after the opening round. Schwartzel claimed the lead after a 5-under 65 on Thursday, with Du Plessis one stroke back at under 4. Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson shared seventh place after shooting 1-under 69s.
Following the tee-off, the PGA Tour suspended the 17 competitors in the event. Players that compete in the LIV tournament are unable to compete on the PGA Tour or any other tour sanctioned by the PGA Tour. Players who compete in future LIV golf tournaments will incur the same penalty.

- The 2011 Masters champion, Charl Schwartzel, shot 5 under par on Thursday at Centurion Golf Club.
- He slowly but steadily climbed the leaderboard, eventually finishing with a one-stroke win over fellow South African Hennie Du Plessis.
- Phachara Khongwatmai finished third at 3 under par, after leading for the majority of the day.

- Dustin Johnson had a good shot for eagle on the 18th, his penultimate hole of the day. While he didn’t sink it, he did bring the ball close enough to the hole for a simple birdie. That puts him below par for the event.
