The winner was facilitated with a trophy that represented the two competing continents with a new Finalissima logo imprinted on the trophy. This logo was based on the laurel wreath, a symbol of victory.

Though this match resulted in a victory for one but Also an honorable defeat for the Another. Italy’s brilliant team also gave a tough competition with their defender, Giorgio Chiellini, who played the first half of the game, counting the 118th  match of his career and final international match.

This historical match took place at Wembley Stadium, London. England. The match was played on 1st June 2022. It began at 20:45 CET (19:45 local time, 15:45 in Argentina).

The Finalissima match was a one-off match that lasted 90 minutes and had no extra time, so if the score was tied at the end of regulation time, penalties were used.

The Highlight of the Match

Another highlight of the match is that the two continental champions faced off for the first time in 29 years, the last being 1993 (i.e. Italy, winner of UEFA EURO 2020, and Argentina, winner of the 2021 Copa America).

Before that, the history between these two continental champions goes back to 1985 and 1993, when the winners of the prior UEFA European Championship and Copa America tournaments played in the Artemio Franchi Cup (also known as the Nations Cup), a one-off match organized by UEFA  and CONMEBOL.  It was the national team equivalent to the International Cup on the club level, played between the winners of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League and Copa Libertadores.

The match is part of the expansion of the cooperation between UEFA and CONMEBOL. A joint UEFA–CONMEBOL committee examined the possibility of staging European–South American intercontinental matches for both men’s and women’s football and across various age groups, which means this match notably includes women’s football, futsal, and youth categories, the exchange of referees, as well as technical training schemes.

As UEFA president Aleksander Eferin stated in December, they were looking forward to the competition finals because the bar had been set very high by all of the teams.
