What are Graham Crackers?

A Graham Cracker is a sweet cracker made with a certain kind of flour called Graham Flour. It is a really popular snack item consumed primarily in the United States of America. It is consumed by itself or with tea sometimes. One of the most popular cracker flavors is cinnamon and honey.

The origin of the Graham Cracker

The Graham Cracker is named after a minister, Sylvester Graham, and it was his teachings that were the inspiration behind this cracker. His teachings inspired the cracker’s creation way back in 1829. His teachings had one and only one goal in mind: to prevent humans from going to hell. His preaching inculcated habits of curtailing pleasure as an overdose of pleasure is sinful for humans, and humans can fall under the traps of sin. Vegetarianism and this curtailment of pleasure are his major teaching philosophies. The diet he promotes is bread-intensive and dry-flour-based, and he proclaimed that humans were fated for this way of life.

His preachings spread in popularity especially during pandemics as bread and vegetarianism is cheaper for the common man. Due to low-income levels, bread is the most popular food for the impoverished. The followers of these preachings called themselves Grahamites, and thus led to the origin of the flour named after him. The National Graham Crackers Day is celebrated on July 5 in honor of Sylvester Graham’s birthday.

Graham’s Opinion on Bread

He was a staunch believer that the bread sold to the common man back then was highly adulterated and was mixed with a variety of items, which reduced its quality. In order to fight back against this, the Graham cracker was invented. This movement exists to this day and age and countless followers still follow his lifestyle.

The Production of Graham Crackers

The only items required for making these crackers are flour, oil and salt. Biscuit companies all over the United States have tried to master the cracker as far back as the 1910s. These mass-produced crackers are consumed by the public either directly or through pies in which these biscuits act as crusts.
